Day Nine
Today we reach the first of Joseph’s twenty-four titles, “Noble Offspring of David.” By the way, Joseph’s 21st title is “Hope of the Sick,” so please entrust those suffering from the virus, and the vastly more numerous individuals suffering from the global chaos, to St. Joseph, that they not lose hope.
As descendant of King David, Joseph has royal blood. David himself was reluctant to take the Ark of the Covenant into his home, knowing the Ark’s divine power and his own human weakness. Joseph too was afraid to take Mary into his home, knowing she had conceived the Son of God. But the angel strengthened him: “Do not be afraid, Joseph, to take Mary into your home.”
My brothers! Realize your own nobility! “Every man is the king of his own home” Fr. Calloway points out. I say to my brother priests, and to my sons and brothers whom God calls to marriage and fatherhood: Do not be afraid to take your wives and children to your heart, for royal blood flows in our veins. St. Joseph, whom we affectionately call “our father and lord,” will strengthen us to assume our kingship as sons of the one true God.
